Grading

Final grades will be based on a standard scale:

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59% or less

Grading will be assessed by the student’s performance in five areas:

Exams = 30% (1 midterm, 1 final)
Lab Reports = 25%
Quizzes = 20%
Prelabs = 15%
Lab preparation and class participation = 10%

Attendance and Class Participations

Class participation points are partly earned through attendance alone. This class is a “hands-on” laboratory and attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to arrive to class on time, participate in discussions and project presentations as well as taking a major role in every laboratory exercise.

Make Up Quizes and Exams

There are no makeup quizzes or exams, unless the student is ill or the instructor has been sufficiently warned in advance.

Ethics

Students are expected to participate in class, and interaction with fellow students with respect to labs and homework assignments is encouraged. However, cheating on quizzes or exams, or plagiarism in writing assignments is strictly forbidden and the student will be dealt with severely. You can read about the university’s code of conduct here.

Lab Safety

We will be working in a classroom laboratory with potentially dangerous chemicals and equipment. You are required to wear laboratory safety glasses when the instructor indicates that a lab will require extra attention to eye safety. Shoes (“closed toe”) are required in all laboratory classrooms. Students will be advised of safety procedures and potential hazards by the instructor and are expected to follow these instructions carefully.

Micsellaneous Policies

In respect to everyone, please turn off all cell phones and pagers!
Only students registered for this class may attend.
No eating, drinking or smoking is allowed during laboratory exercises.
