Summer Prep Course for High School Students
Professional Development Course for K-12 Teachers

Updated: 21July2005

Description:

The FORENSICS: The DNA Detectives "camp" at the University of Arizona is a preparatory course designed to be fun, interesting and exciting summer experience while exposing students entering the 11th and 12th grade to "real-life" career possibilities in life and physical sciences. High school students in the lower grades are accepted on a case-by-case basis (must demonstrate superior science grades).

In this course, students will be presented with mock crime scenes or scenarios from actual cases. The cases and crime scenes may be based on murders, paternity cases, and other DNA-based investigations. Other types of evidence will also be considered. During the investigations, students will have access to laboratory techniques and equipment used for collecting and analyzing evidence. We will focus primarily on current technologies for DNA analysis (Forensic Biology). The students will also be introduced to a variety of forensic disciplines (and technologies) such as latent prints, ballistics, microscopy, chemistry plus others.

There will be opportunity to interact with law enforcement officials, crime scene technicians, crime laboratory personnel and court officials to discover multiple career possibilities within law enforcement agencies, forensic laboratories, the judicial system and in scientific research. Field trips will include visits to UA Biotech Facilities, the Tucson Police Department Crime Laboratory, the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County and the UA College of Law Courtroom.

The course will conclude with moot court in which students will have the opportunity to testify as a forensic analyst. For additional information, please Al Agellon.
