Mission Statement
Biotechnology is a high-technology industry that employs highly trained personnel. It does not require large sources of raw materials, water, or power, and does not produce large amounts of undesirable waste products.
These attributes coupled with the state's economic development plan, which emphasizes biomedical and biotechnology as an industry cluster, makes biotechnology a vital component of the University of Arizona's mission.
Equally important, the rapidly advancing technology encompassed in "biotechnology" provides investigators and students with the tools necessary to carry out leading-edge biological, chemical and engineering research by making them competitive in research and development, and in the case of students, successfully compete for careers in the biomedical and biotechnology fields. In this context, the ARL Division of Biotechnology is a faculty owned and operated activity designed to carry out the following principal functions:
- To support ongoing research by providing access to state-of-the art technology to attract and retain research active faculty and to facilitate their ability to compete for federal and industrial research support.
- To facilitate inter-university cooperative multidisciplinary research projects.
- To support the creation and development of new or existing industrial activities as well as support other state agencies, and when possible facilitate interactions with Mexico.
