Biotechnology Overview

The Arizona Research Laboratories - Division of Biotechnology is faculty driven entity consisting of six core facilities providing multidisciplinary expertise and access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology to selected areas of biotechnology. We aim to disseminate current techniques to investigators and students so that they may increase their ability to perform research in life sciences. Our facilities are committed to increasing public awareness and understanding of biotechnology and its impacts on everyday life. We have a diverse array of instrumentation and technical capabilities in Genomics (GATC),Bioinformatics (BCF), Cytometry (CCF), Imaging (BIF), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (BMR) and Proteomics (Proteomics Consortium).

The GATC facility focuses on key technologies in genomics such as DNA Sequencing, Fragment Analysis, Sample Purification, Real-time PCR and Microarrays. GATC also offers facilities for pilot studies and one-on-one training facilities. The BCF focuses on computational resources to support students and investigators in processing and analyzing of biological data. The Cytometry Core Facility provides access to equipment and services, extensive training and support for cellular studies. The BMR provides resources in magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy and is also fully equipped with several high end instruments and computational resources for data analysis. The Biotechnology Imaging Facilities provide resources and support in light, confocal and electron microscopy. The facilities also conduct several workshops and courses in image acquisition and analysis throughout the year. The PAL is jointly operated with BIO5 - The Institute for Collaborative Bioresearch. The facility provides expertise and technology in proteomics such as 1-D and 2-D lectrophoresis, variable mode imaging, DIGE, in-gel digestion, nanoLC-MS/MS, nanoLC-LC-MS/MS, MALDI-TOF-MS, SEQUEST database searching and data analysis, FPLC, and HPLC.
